According to a Breitbart report, an overwhelming 43 people have been shot in Chicago since Saturday night this weekend alone. The shootings, of which four were fatal, took place between 7 p.m. Saturday and 6:11 a.m. Sunday. One of these victims was a 29-year-old female police officer.

Chicago Police Officer Ella French and her partner were shot during what should have been a routine traffic stop. The Chicago Tribune pointed out three suspects, two males and a female, were in the car the officers had stopped and at least one of the three opened fire on the officers. The female officer was killed and the male officer was hospitalized, fighting for his life.

According to report from the The Herald-Review, the officers were able to return fire on the suspects, wounding one of them. The incident took place Saturday night in the West Englewood neighborhood on the city’s South Side, according to CPD.

“Our hearts ache for the loss of life,” Mayor Lori Lightfoot said at the news conference.

This weekend’s tragedy marks the first time an officer was shot and killed in the line of duty since Lightfoot became mayor in 2019. Last year, the deaths of four other Chicago cops who died of causes relating to COVID-19 were also considered by the police department to be in the line of duty.

The CPD community came together in a display of support for the officers. Many of their fellow officers gathered outside the hospital where one officer is still fighting through his wounds.

Saturday night’s violence means 155 people have been shot thus far this month, and 23 of those individuals succumbed to their wounds.

As Lori Lightfoot insists the city is seeing a downtrend in gun violence, the evidence affirms the opposite. Gun crime is as much of a problem for the Windy City as it has ever been, raising the age-old question: What can be done?

One thing that is obvious not to work is the “Defund The Police” movement, a movement that has gained traction that aligns with crime spikes in many of the Democrat run cities it has been pushed, Chicago being one of them.

The latest to push this idea, Democrat Cori Bush, that doubled down on defunding the police as she claimed to have hired a private security team. The Missouri Democrat said in an interview on CBSN that she had spent $70,000 on private security while also reacting to critics of her defund the police stance.

The real world consequences of this movement have bared themselves out to Americans all over the country. In this latest example, a young police officer paid the ultimate price. We honor her sacrifice and thank her for her service to er community.
