The Oregon Department of Education recently released teacher training for “an anti-racist math practice,” as reported by Fox News.
The training, entitled “Pathway to Equity,” aims to provide “guidance and resources for educators to use now as they plan their curriculum, while also offering opportunities for ongoing self-reflection as they seek to develop an anti-racist math practice.” The program consists of five lectures, in which “Teachers will learn key tools of engagement that support the application of the Toolkit in all learning environments.”
The toolkit mentioned above is called “Dismantling Racism in Mathematics Instruction.” This 81 page training guide advocates for “ethnomathematics,” in which teachers are instructed to “Identify and challenge the ways that math is used to uphold capitalist, imperialist, racist views.”
“White supremacy culture shows up in math classrooms when… ‘Real world math’ is valued over math in the real world,” the guide reads on page 58. “However, this can result in using mathematics to uphold capitalist and imperialist ways of being and understandings of the world. Instead… Learn about, engage with, and incorporate ethnomathematics.”
This training also attacks the existence of objective answers in mathematics. On page 65, the guide claims, “The concept of mathematics being purely objective is unequivocally false, and teaching it is even much less so. Upholding the idea that there are always right and wrong answers perpetuate objectivity as well as fear of open conflict.”
Apparently, according to this toolkit, there are no right answers in math, and objectivity is something to be feared.
This guide, designed around subjective answers and “ethnomathematics,” provides “5 Strides on the Path to Math Equity:” dismantling racism in mathematics instruction, fostering deep understanding, creating conditions to thrive, connecting critical intersections, and sustaining equitable practice.
This training was created by the San Mateo Office of Education, alongside multiple other groups. The Oregon Department of Education promoted this curriculum in a Math Educator Update on Feb. 5, writing, “Our friends at the Pathway to Equitable Math Instruction are offering a virtual micro-course beginning February 25, 2021, titled “Pathway to Math Equity…”
While speaking to Fox News, the Oregon Department of Education Communications Director, Marc Siegel, defended this curriculum. He claimed that it “helps educators learn key tools for engagement, develop strategies to improve equitable outcomes for Black, Latinx, and multilingual students, and join communities of practice.”
Critical Race Theory has gained a strong foothold in the American education system. Beginning in preschool, all the way up through middle school, the far-left is indoctrinating students with Marxist ideology. If liberty in America is to be preserved, it must first be preserved in the schools.
