President Joe Biden is expected to reveal a package of executive orders aimed at gun control on Thursday, reports Politico.
Biden will order the administration to begin the process of requiring buyers of ghost guns, which are homemade firearms, to undergo background checks.
Other executive order remain clear, but advocates have suggested that Biden could sign orders regarding regulations on “assault rifles,” prohibitions on firearm purchases for those convicted of domestic violence, alerts to law enforcement agencies if an individual fails a background check, and federal guidance on home gun storage.
More than 100 Democrats wrote to Biden last week, suggesting that he take executive action on “assault rifles.”
Biden is also expected to appoint David Chipman as his director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). He is expected to play a key role in any executive orders Biden signs.
Biden will unveil the orders with Attorney General Merrick Garland, members of Congress, gun control advocates, community organizations, and gun violence survivors.
“The administration has been working hard from Day One to pursue actions to reduce gun violence,” said a senior Biden administration official. “We understand the urgency. No one understands the urgency more than the president and are looking forward to rolling out some of the initial actions we can take.”
