“NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2021 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Pride Month,” said the proclamation.

“I call upon the people of the United States to recognize the achievements of the LGBTQ+ community, to celebrate the great diversity of the American people, and to wave their flags of pride high,” continued the proclamation.

Biden also touted the steps his administration is taking to continue “the historic progress made towards LGBTQ+ equality” since he took office. The proclamation described several measures his administration will be taking, such as resending Trump’s ban on transgender people from serving in the military.

“While I am proud of the progress my Administration has made in advancing protections for the LGBTQ+ community, I will not rest until full equality for LGBTQ+ Americans is finally achieved and codified into law,” said Biden.

The administration also announced that U.S embassies can fly pride flags on the same pole as the American flag.

Too many LGBTQ+ Americans across our nation continue facing discrimination and hate, especially LGBTQ+ people of color and transgender Americans, and some states are attempting to roll back the clock on equality with discriminatory bills that target LGBTQ+ people and families,” continued the proclamation. “The Biden-Harris Administration reaffirms that no one should face discrimination or harassment because of who they are or whom they love.”

Biden also expressed his support for the Equality Act, calling for Congress to pass the measure. The Equality Act would amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by adding sexual orientation and gender identity as a protected class.
