A faction of Trump supporters has surrounded the Capitol, and is currently pushing their way inside the building.
After President Trump gave a speech for an hour and a half, a faction of his supporters marched a mile down Constitution Avenue to the Capitol. This comes following Vice President Pence’s announcement that he will certify the electoral votes in favor of Joe Biden, which has apparently angered a relatively small faction of President Trump’s supporters. According to the AP, the Capitol is now surrounded, with protesters pushing their way inside.
The U.S. Capitol Police have announced a security threat inside the building, and both the House and Senate are in recess due to these concerns. The House and Senate are currently sheltering in place. It seems that police are having a difficult time containing the group, as many thousands are still surrounding and pushing their way inside of the Capitol. Police can barely contain this group.
At the time of publication, protesters have pushed their way into the capitol rotunda, and are parading through the Statuary Hall, one of the Capitol building’s innermost sanctums. Tear gas has just been deployed inside the Capitol rotunda. Members of Congress are currently donning gas masks and preparing evacuation measures, as protesters are pushing in on the House doors.
As reported by Fox News, Florida Congressman Michael Waltz (R) says, “This is despicable. This is not who we are as a country.” President Trump has just tweeted, “Please support our Capitol Police and Law Enforcement. They are truly on the side of our Country. Stay peaceful!”
Police are attempting to break up the crowd, with little success. This is a developing story. Check back with The RF Angle for updates.
