People who have received the coronavirus vaccine do not need to wear masks indoors or outdoors or socially distance in small or large gatherings, said Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky announced on Thursday.
Those who are fully vaccinated should continue to wear masks in crowded indoor spaces like public transportation, hospitals, and prisons.
“We have all longed for this moment when we can get back to some sense of normalcy,” said Walensky. “Based on the continuing downward trajectory of cases, the scientific data on the performance of our vaccines and our understanding of how the virus spreads, that moment has come for those who are fully vaccinated.”
Those who are immunocompromised should consult their doctor before ditching masks, said Walenski, also adding that if cases go up this guidance could change.
“This virus can be unpredictable, so if things get worse there is always a chance we need to make a change to these recommendations,” said Walensky.
A person is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after they have received the last dose of the vaccine. According to the CDC, 35 percent of the population are fully vaccinated.
