Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has called on Vice President Mike Pence to “invoke the 25th amendment” and remove President Donald Trump from office. Schumer called the riot that occurred at the Capitol building yesterday “an insurrection against the United States” which was “incited by President Trump.”
“This president must not hold office one day longer,” Schumer said.
The 25th amendment provides procedures for replacing the president or vice president in the case of death, removal, incapacitation, or resignation. It includes a section that permits the sitting vice president and a majority of the Cabinet members to declare the current president “unable” to do the job.
Representative Adam Kinzinger of Illinois became the first Republican Congressman to call on Pence to use the 25th amendment to remove Trump.
Fox News reported that neither Pence nor any Cabinet official has had conversations about invoking the 25th amendment.
This will not stop Democrats from trying to remove Trump from office via impeachment. Democrat Representative Ilhan Omar drew up articles of impeachment because of Trump’s “high crimes and misdemeanors.”
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez took it a step further by demanding Sens. Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley resign. Ocasio-Cortez claimed Cruz’s and Hawley’s “craven, self-serving actions contributed to the deaths of four people.”
After protestors took over the Capitol building, Congress reconvened and certified Democrat Joe Biden as the President-Elect of the United States.
