With reports swirling that Rep. Liz Cheney is on her way out of the door as chairwoman of the House Republican Conference, Rep. Elise Stefanik has her eyes set on taking Cheney’s place.
Cheney has been in hot water with many Republicans since voting to impeach former President Donald Trump for allegedly inciting the Jan. 6 riot that took place at the Capitol. She survived a no-confidence vote in February but has not mended fences with many members of her party since then.
She has consistently stated that she would not be in favor of Trump running for president again, and several Republican leaders want a vote brought up to remove her from her leadership position because she is more focused on Trump, rather than what really matters.
Elise Stefanik is a contender to replace Liz Cheney. Stefanik became well-known during the first impeachment of President Trump, where she fiercely defended him against articles of foreign interference in the 2020 election.
Since then, Rep. Stefanik has continued to gain fame in the Republican party. During the 2020 election cycle, she worked with her Political Action Committee to get fellow Republican women elected to Congressional seats across the country.
The shakeup in leadership could come before the end of the month. “I suspect that within the next two weeks Elise Stefanik will be our conference chair,” said Texas Representative, Lance Gooden.
Trump also endorsed Stefanik for the role.
“Liz Cheney is a warmongering fool who has no business in Republican Party Leadership,” said Trump. “We want leaders who believe in the Make America Great Again movement, and prioritize the values of America First. Elise Stefanik is a far superior choice, and she has my COMPLETE and TOTAL endorsement for GOP Conference Chair. Elise is a tough and smart communicator!”
According to a January poll conducted by John McLaughlin, 62 percent of Wyoming voters hold an unfavorable view toward Congresswoman Cheney.
