Federal investigators have reportedly executed a search warrant at Rudy Giuliani’s NYC apartment, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press.
The Trump ally is currently under investigation for his business dealings in Ukraine. Details regarding the search were not immediately given to the Associated Press. The official could not discuss the investigation publically and wished to remain anonymous.
Investigators seized Giuliani’s electronic devices and searched his apartment and office around 6. a.m.
“What they did today was legal thuggery,” said Giuliani’s attorney, Robert J. Costello, referring to the searches as unnecessary. “Why would you do this to anyone, let alone someone who was the associate attorney general, United States attorney, the mayor of New York City, and the personal lawyer to the 45th president of the United States.”
Federal investigators are focused on whether Giuliani illegally lobbied the Trump administration on behalf of Ukrainian politicians. These same officials were allegedly searching for dirt on Trump’s political rivals, including Joe Biden.
The US Attorney’s office and the F.B.I had sought a warrant for months but was allegedly blocked by the Trump administration’s Justice Department. After Merrick Garland was confirmed as Biden’s attorney general, the Justice Department allowed authorities to execute the warrant.
