Jones, a former longtime Democratic lawmaker, plans on running for governor of Georgia as a Republican in 2022 against incumbent Governor Brian Kemp. The announcement was formally made during a press conference outside of the Georgia State Capitol building in Atlanta, Georgia on April 16th. This follows Governor Kemp receiving backlash from many members of the GOP during the 2020 presidential election.
“Governor Brian Kemp has failed Georgia and continues to refuse to fight for We the People, and that’s why I am officially announcing my candidacy for Governor of the great state of Georgia” Jones stated on the steps of Liberty Plaza.
Jones has repeatedly expressed his disappointment in how Governor Kemp handled the outcome of the 2020 presidential election, refusing to help President Trump’s efforts to overturn the results in the state of Georgia.
It is still uncertain whether former President Trump will endorse Jones in his race for governor, however, he was seen at Mar-a-Lago in South Florida and even posted a video on Twitter of them together talking about an unknown announcement.
“The location is set, Mr President. I hope to see my fellow Georgians at Liberty Plaza at 10am as I share my plans for the future of this state. We will put #Georgiafirst.” Jones tweeted along with the video of himself and Trump.
“I am excited to share my vision with the people of Georgia, and all I ask is that you give my campaign a fair look and I think you may like what you see- no matter who you are.” Jones concluded in his announcement message.
