After Florida Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz introduced an amendment to say the Pledge of Allegiance before Judiciary Committee hearings, Democrat lawmakers were caught on a hot mic mocking him for it.

Gaetz previously requested that the Pledge be recited at the beginning of hearings. However, New York Democrat Rep. Jerry Nadler said it was “unnecessary.”

“We’re all aware that in these times it’s important for the country to see members of congress working together on some things and while I know we can deal with divisive issues in the committee, uh, it would be my hope we could start every committee with a great unifying, patriotic moment. I yield back,” Gaetz said during the hearing.

🚨 HAPPENING NOW: @RepMattGaetz just requested that the Judiciary Committee recite the Pledge of Allegiance at the start of each hearing. @RepJerryNadler said it was "unnecessary."

On Thursday, the Daily Caller obtained a video file that caught Democrat committee members on a hot mic mocking Americans who say the Pledge of Allegiance as well as those who pray.

“I wake up in the morning and I pledge allegiance to the flag, I go outside regardless of the weather, I got my flag up by my house and I pledge allegiance. Then I get on my knees and I pray. If I do that, if I, do I have to, am I supposed to do it again and how many times a day should I do that?” Tennessee Democrat Rep. Steve Cohen said.

“I think you should do it at least every hour,” another Democrat responded.

“So what do they want? Do they want prayers said before the beginning of each meeting and the pledge or just the pledge,” Cohen questioned. An unidentified Democrat responded, “Just the pledge.”

“I remember in the first grade we had something like this,” Cohen continued.

“I remember too, I remember on Fridays at 10 o clock we duck below our desks in the event of a nuclear bomb,” an unidentified Democrat joked.

Cohen then turned to Washington Democrat Rep. Pramila Jayapal and told her that she “should do something about this” because she is head of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

Every Democrat voted against Gaetz’s proposal. Utah Republican Rep. Burgess Owens tweeted that the Democrats’ actions were “pathetic.”

It's pretty pathetic, not a single Democrat Rep could be bothered to show 15 seconds of unity and patriotism while reciting our pledge of allegiance. 15 seconds, that's all @mattgaetz asked for. America deserves better, much better. We owe our constituents more. https://t.co/eTa6KOYu59

This comes as Democrats have seemingly launched an assault on traditional American practices in recent months. Missouri Democrat Rep. Emanuel Cleaver ended the first congressional prayer of the current session with the words “amen and awoman” in January.

House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) announced he would propose a measure to make the “Black national anthem,” the official U.S. hymn in an effort to promote unity.

According to the New Hampshire Union Leader, dozens of New Hampshire House Democrats refused to stand for the national anthem during the final session of the Legislature last year.
