President Trump on Wednesday tweeted that several rockets that hit the US embassy in Baghdad were launched by Iran and that there is “chatter” of additional attacks by Iran.
“Our embassy in Baghdad got hit Sunday by several rockets,” said Trump. “Three rockets failed to launch. Guess where they were from: IRAN. Now we hear chatter of additional attacks against Americans in Iraq…”
“…Some friendly health advice to Iran: If one American is killed, I will hold Iran responsible. Think it over,” warned Trump.” Trump also tweeted an image of three rockets that failed to launched.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also blamed Iraq for the attack on the embassy on Sunday.
“Iran-backed militias once again flagrantly and recklessly attacked in Baghdad, wounding Iraqi civilians,” said Pompeo. “The people of Iraq deserve to have these attackers prosecuted. These violent and corrupt criminals must cease their destabilizing actions.”
According to the U.S Embassy Baghdad’s Twitter, there was only minor damage to the embassy. There were reports of damage to residential areas near the embassy, according to the tweet.
A statement by the Iraqi military said “an outlawed group” launched eight rockets towards the embassy, injuring one Iraqi security person at a checkpoint, and damaging a residential complex and cars. The complex is typically empty.
A U.S official told Fox News that the American military deployed counter rocket, artillery, and mortar defense system (C-RAM) to intercept the rockets.
Joyce Karam, a Senior Correspondent for The National, tweeted what is allegedly a video of the rockets being intercepted, saying that the embassy was “targeted with a barrage of Katyusha Rockets and mortar shells.”
