During a speech where President Joe Biden unveiled his executive orders regarding gun control, Joe Biden stated his belief that none of the 27 Amendments were “absolute.”
“No amendment to the Constitution is absolute,” said Joe Biden during the speech. “You can’t yell ‘fire’ in a crowded movie theater and call it freedom of speech. From the beginning, you couldn’t own any weapon you wanted to own.”
During the speech, Biden unveiled the executive actions he is planning on taking in order to combat gun violence.
He plans on directing the Justice Department to require background checks on so called “ghost guns,” which are firearms created by an individual and lack a serial number or any identifying characteristics. Biden also plans on clarifying that attaching a stabilizing brace to a pistol turns it into a short-barreled rifle under the National Firearms Act.
Biden will be pushing the Justice Department to create “red flag” legislations for states, which would allow courts to temporarily ban individuals from purchasing a firearm if they are a danger to others or themselves.
Biden will also nominate David Chipman as the head of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
