The New York City Department of Education is sponsoring a drag queen series targeted at 3 to 8-year-old children.
The show, called “Let’s Learn,” is hosted by a drag queen that goes by “Lil Miss Hot Mess.”
The individual who plays the queen, Harris David Harris, is a queen from San Francisco, California, and claims to be one of the first drag queens that hosted a reading hour for children.
“I am a drag queen and a children’s book author, and you may be wondering to yourself: ‘What on earth is a drag queen?” says Harris in one of the videos.
Harris says that drag queens are “everyday people who like to play pretend and dress up as often as we can,” also adding that “are leaders in our community, and if you ask me: we make pretty good role models.”
During the video, Harris states “I think we might have some drag queens in training on our hands.”
Harris also reads from his children book titled The Hips On the Drag Queen Go Swish Swish Swish, a parody of the famous children’s song “The Wheels on the Bus Go Round and Round.”
“I wrote this book because I wanted everyone to get to experience the magic of drag and to get a little practice shaking their hips or shimmying their shoulders to know how we can feel fabulous inside of our own bodies,” said Harris.
The series was hosted by the Department of Education in partnership with the local PBS station WNET-TV. PBS insists that they did not create the show, they only aired it.
