State University of New York (SUNY) Geneseo recently suspended an education student from their field teaching program for posts on his personal Instagram that express conservative ideology.
According to a report by The Daily Wire, student Owen Stevens received an email from his university suspending him from the teaching program after his classmates saw his Instagram videos.
The university alleged that the videos Stevens created “call into question” his ability to “maintain a classroom environment protecting the mental and emotional well-being of all of [his] students.”
The school further claims that Stevens’ videos violated the university doctrine, supposedly put in place to cultivate “a diverse campus community marked by mutual respect for the unique talents and contributions of each individual.”
“A man is a man, a woman is a woman. A man is not a woman, and a woman is not a man,” Stevens said in one of his videos. “A man cannot become a woman, and a woman cannot become a man.”
“Regardless of what you feel on the inside, is irrelevant to your biological status. It doesn’t change the biology,” the student added.
The Dean of the School of Education told Stevens that his biological stance on gender is “in conflict” with the Dignity for All Students Act. The Dean also insinuated that any future student in the education program would be required to support homosexuality and gender identity in all of its aspects.
The Daily Wire obtained a copy of the suspension. According to the document, the university required Stevens to complete a “remediation plan” that would include removing the Instagram videos he created on his account, decreasing his social media presence, and attending school-sanctioned training. In other words, SUNY Geneseo is attempting to silence Stevens’ voice, to silence his political, biological, and religious beliefs.
Stevens told The Daily Wire that he refuses to participate in their “re-education” training.
In an email correspondence obtained by The Daily Wire, the university also sent an email to the student body and staff condemning Stevens for his posts. The university president wrote, “Yesterday, I was made aware of a current student’s Instagram posts pertaining to transgender people.” He continued, “I want to take this opportunity to publicly restate my deep personal commitment to promoting social justice.” The school president even went as far as to indicate that the university would take additional action against Stevens.
Stevens told The Daily Wire that he has received threats from his peers over his videos and the entire ordeal.
“I’ve received threats and horrible incidents of students who all feel like they are making the world a better place by becoming the woke thought police,” said Stevens. “Overall, I want justice and the right thing to be done.”
