A member of a private Facebook group for members of a California teachers union warned other members to hold back posting spring break pictures because it may hurt the argument that in-person schooling is unsafe, according to a report by Fox 11.

The screenshot, obtained by Fox 11, was taken from a private Facebook group called “UTLA FB GROUP – Members only.” The group has around 5,700 members. The post asks union members not to share vacation photos or show that they are traveling outside the country.

“Friendly reminder: If you are planning any trips for Spring Break, please keep that off of Social Media,” says the post. “It is hard to argue that it is unsafe for in-person instruction, if parents and the public see vacation photos and international travel.”

Statement from UTLA to @FOXLA when we asked about the post:
"We have a diverse membership and they are able to post their views on personal Facebook pages and in this Facebook group – however UTLA does not monitor nor is responsible for the content." Parents angry. Story at 10pm.

The warning came days after the union voted to not send teachers back to classrooms unless a list of demands are met. Some of the demands included infections still in the “Purple tier”, staff must be fully vaccinated, and daily cleaning, ventilation, PPE, and physical distancing.

About 90% of union members voted not to return to classes.

“We have a diverse membership and they are able to post their views on personal Facebook pages and in this Facebook group – however UTLA does not monitor nor is responsible for the content,” said the union when reached out by Fox 11. “We do not want to discourage a robust dialogue for members in the public square of opinion.”
