On New Year’s Eve, the Trump campaign filed a new lawsuit in an attempt to put pressure on the state of Georgia to decertify their 2020 election results. The complaint followed President Trump’s call with Georgia’s Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. During the call, President Trump attempted to sort out the alleged election irregularities seen in the General Election on Nov. 3rd. An audio recording of the call was leaked shortly after by The Washington Post.
The complaint stated that Georgia violated its state election codes and violated the Electors and Elections Clause and the Due Process Clause found within the U.S. Constitution. The complaint further claimed that Georgia ignored “express directions regarding the collection, handling, processing, canvassing, and counting of absentee ballots” and “certified an unconstitutional and unlawful” 2020 Presidential election in the state.
Georgia’s election results were certified on Dec. 7th. Since then, Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger has spoken out against Trump’s claims that he won Georgia. However, last night during his visit to Georgia on the night before the critical Senate runoff election, Trump again stated that the election was “rigged,” firmly believing that he had been victorious in Georgia.
