In a traditionally incoherent and misleading rant, Joe Biden reignited his assault on the second amendment and law-abiding gun owners in this country Wednesday afternoon. While giving an address from the White House, the President again began to re-introduce his extreme plans to curb the second amendment and gun ownership in the United States, a country that was built by patriots taking up arms against a tyrannical government.
During his speech, Biden made yet another push with his advocacy for a ban on certain weapons Americans could own as well as reminded lawful gun owners that the federal government has “nuclear weapons.”
“Those who say the blood of Patriots, you know, and all the stuff about how we’re gonna have to move against the government,” the President said. “If you think you need to have weapons to take on the government, you need F-15s and maybe some nuclear weapons.”
The President also reiterated the Democrat talking point that the Second Amendment “from the day it was passed” limited the type of person that could own a gun as well as the type of gun a person could own, in order to make their push that the federal government had the authority to ban “assault weapons.” Although believers in this stance have trouble defining what “assault weapons” or “weapons of war” actually are, they are most often referring to the AR-15, one of the most commonly owned guns in the country.
He then went on to falsely state that the Clinton era ban on modern rifles, better known as “the assault weapons ban,” reduced crime in a notable way. In fact, there have been at least two famous studies that have actually disproved this idea that banning these types of weapons reduced crime, which would make sense since a fair amount of crime involving guns is committed with illegally obtained firearms.
One such study, a 2004 Department of Justice funded study from the University of Pennsylvania Center of Criminology concluded the ban cannot be credited with a decrease in violence carried out with firearms. The report is titled “An Updated Assessment of the Federal Assault Weapons Ban: Impacts on Gun Markets and Gun Violence, 1994-2003.”
“We cannot clearly credit the ban with any of the nation’s recent drop in gun violence. And, indeed, there has been no discernible reduction in the lethality and injuriousness of gun violence, based on indicators like the percentage of gun crimes resulting in death or the share of gunfire incidents resulting in injury,” the summary of the report on the study’s findings states. “The ban’s impact on gun violence is likely to be small at best, and perhaps too small for reliable measurement. AWs [assault weapons] were used in no more than 8% of gun crimes even before the ban.”
The other note worthy study from Quinnipiac University shows the same finding.
“The purpose of the present study is to determine the effects of state-level assault weapons bans and concealed weapons laws on state-level murder rates. Using data for the period 1980 to 2009 and controlling for state and year fixed effects, the results of the present study suggest that states with restrictions on the carrying of concealed weapons had higher gun-related murder rates than other states,” the study concluded. “It was also found that assault weapons bans did not significantly affect murder rates at the state level. These results suggest that restrictive concealed weapons laws may cause an increase in gun-related murders at the state level.”
Biden also went back to one of his tried and true line about magazine sizes and for some odd reason, again brought up the idea that deer are wearing Kevlar vests.
Neglecting to call out the “defund the police” movement for its role in surging rises in crimes like murder in many major, Democrat-run cities, the President also falsely claimed that these cities did not have strict gun control measures in place. Cities like Chicago, New York, or Baltimore, where they in fact do have very strict gun laws but also high than average rates of crime compared to cities with lower gun control measures.
The “defund the police” movement has directly led to the reduction of police forces across the country in these and other cities due to diverting of police funding and resources but above all, the increasingly negative sentiment people have begun to have toward police officers. Nonetheless, the President promised to provide more federal funding to these Democrat cities in order to hire more police. It is clear and has been for quite some time that the most effective means to combat these rising crime statistics have been more policing, like policies of “broken windows” policing. As well as cracking down on lower levels of crime in an effort to deter more serious crimes.
Trying to curb the Second Amendment rights of Americans has long been a platform of the Democratic party as well as Biden himself. It is also a topic that has gradually torn at the seams of American society more and moreover the years between Second Amendment supporting Americans and those who are more opposed to it, in some cases completely opposed.
It is an issue some red states and red-state governors have moved against, as is the case with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis banning local governments from imposing gun regulations. Gun control legislation is very clearly a flash-point issue between right-wing states and their blue counterparts that is going to cause more irreparable damage to the culture of America, a culture that was built around the God-given right to bear arms.
