With the fall of Kabul and most of the country of Afghanistan to the Taliban, questions remain on the plan or lack thereof for our exit of the region. One giant question on many peoples minds, what happens to all the American weaponry left behind?
Well look no further than the photos and videos coming out of the failed nation-state courtesy of the Taliban. Billions of dollars in military weapons, ammunition, vehicles and equipment such as drones have now fallen into the hands of the Taliban. With the abrupt exit of most military and state personnel, all this equipment was abandoned and left behind to be taken over by those we have been using such weaponry to fight for the last 20 years.
One month ago, President Biden assured the American people that this would not at all resemble a “Saigon moment” and that the Afghan army would be able to hold their own in the face of these fanatics. Biden bragged about the terrific quality of the modern “tools, training, and equipment” sent to the Afghan military at the expense of U.S. taxpayers over the past two decades.
The President was dismissive of the idea that the Taliban would have an easy road to victory back on July 8th.
“Together, with our NATO Allies and partners, we have trained and equipped over three hu- — nearly 300,000 current serving members of the military — of the Afghan National Security Force, and many beyond that who are no longer serving. Add to that, hundreds of thousands more Afghan National Defense and Security Forces trained over the last two decades.”
“We provided our Afghan partners with all the tools — let me emphasize: all the tools, training, and equipment of any modern military. We provided advanced weaponry. And we’re going to continue to provide funding and equipment. And we’ll ensure they have the capacity to maintain their air force.”
In the rare occurrence where Biden took a question from a reporter, he was asked “do you trust the Taliban?”
“Do I trust the Taliban?” Biden said in response. “No. But I trust the capacity of the Afghan military, who is better trained, better equipped, and more competent in terms of conducting war.”
A little over a month later, the Taliban took over Afghanistan and the capital city of Kabul was under their control, in direct contraction to the reassurance Biden gave to the world.
As their blitzkrieg took place, the Islamist insurgency reportedly scooped up a vast treasure trove of American military hardware, capturing billions of dollars worth of armored vehicles, advanced drones, small arms, heavy weapons, and stockpiles of ammunition.
This vast amount of military hardware made its way to the country and into the hands of the Afghan military’s hands under the illusion that this equipment would be going to a fully competent fighting force. The Taliban quickly proved this notion to be false as the Afghan army fell without much of a fight.
The Biden administration assured the world in a press conference that would eventually become the all out take over of the country would take anywhere from 90 days to six months as government forces could hold out for that time period.
As the government forces “held out” one would think that most of this equipment would have been largely used, this is apparently not that case. According to Breitbart reporting, “insurgents were apparently able to conduct dozens, perhaps hundreds, of covert conversations with Afghan government and military officials without anyone in the U.S. intel community realizing a tidal wave of bloodless conquests leading all the way to Kabul was coming.”
As all this unfolds the President has been largely out of sight besides one scripted press conference in which Biden took no questions from reporters. Quickly after this press conference ended the Biden made his way back to Camp David to continue his vacation.
The void left behind from this hasty and ill executed retreat has begun to be filled by China as they recognize the Taliban as the leaders of the newly formed “Islamic Emirates of Afghanistan.”
While the world on looks at the horrors of the past several days, people around the world are left thinking, what’s next? A question we may sooner or later have the grim answer to.
